I'm reading weird fetish porn about a threesome with a dom and a sub. The sub has a name and a personality, even though she's literally dehumanized. The dom is in absolute control of the situation, but never gets a name, has no emotional needs, and could be replaced with any other dom. The perspective character and the sub start a relationship, but they just walk away and leave the dom behind.

I feel like I would be offended by this if I considered myself a dom.

comments

Comparing Reverse 1999 to Arknights, an Arknights recruitable character is more likely to be a good person deep down, but also more likely to have committed serious crimes. Reverse has more recruitable characters who are low-grade assholes, but haven’t done anything massively wrong. I think I prefer Arknights in this case.

comments

In kindergarten, I was taught that empathy is about feeling what you perceive others as feeling. Like feeling pain because a character in a movie is hurt. Now empathy is supposed to be feeling what others actually feel, which seems less realistic to me.

comments

Hamlet initially theorizes the ghost might not be his father. What if it’s something impersonating his father to manipulate him into hurting his uncle? He confirms the story it tells him is true, but nothing in the text contradicts the idea that it’s only pretending to be his father . . .

comments

Something I tried to express to my mother today

Sometimes you tell me I shouldn't be ashamed of my body, because I have "two arms, two eyes, two ears." Sometimes you even tell me I'm handsome. When you picture the handsome me, I speculate that you picture me with "clean" hair.

From my perspective, my hair returns to a greasy state no matter what I do to it, and the more I clean, the faster it gets greasy again. So when I think of my body, I think of greasy hair. And when you tell me my hair is ugly, I feel--

She interrupted to say she doesn't care how I feel. She cares about not having to look at my disgusting hair.

That was such a waste of time.

comments

I don’t get the whole thing about being friends with someone whose politics you disagree with. If relatively well-informed people can humanely disagree on a political matter, how would I know enough to have an opinion on it? I don’t have any particular insight into how to improve the FDA or the post office or whatnot, because I don’t work in the FDA or the post office. I only care about politics because people keep using it as a stick to beat minorities with.

comments

The point of A Doll's House is that both the husband and wife are "playing house." When Nora walks out, that's because she refuses to be a part of the game any longer. But in everything I can think of where a husband considers walking out, the "happy" path is for him to stay and continue the game.

It's not a perfect genderswap, since part of Ibsen's take is that men like Torvald built the legal system Nora lives under. But the social system makes them both into dolls.

comments

Now that I think about it, my openness to people identifying as whatever may be tied to my disbelief in free will. A common argument is “people will pretend they have mental illnesses so they can claim they have no control over their actions.” I don’t see it as my job to evaluate whose behavior can and can’t be “corrected.” I simply determine what my boundaries are, state them, and limit contact with people who don’t respect those boundaries.

Eh, maybe it’s different for people who have kids, since you take responsibility for teaching kids to respect others’ boundaries. But I have no fucking clue how to ethically raise children, so I always leave them out of my ethics arguments.

comments

The other was Robert Cormier, and as an adult I see no one reference The Chocolate War or I Am the Cheese or We All Fall Down or After the First Death or Tunes for Bears to Dance to or The Rag and Bone Shop or Bunny Berigan—Wasn’t He a Musician or Something? or The Bumblebee Flies Anyway etc. etc. etc.

comments

I'm not sure I have the words to fully explain why this game works. I guess I can compare something like Empowered that flips back and forth between really goofy and really depressing. This game starts out like that, but as it progresses and the writing improves, the goofy parts and the depressing parts feel intimately linked. Like they're a single tone, not two.

The actual content of the game should be kryptonite to me on multiple levels, but I can enjoy and respect it because it fits together so well anyway. Like how I can enjoy Twelve Angry Men or Pink Floyd's The Wall despite both of them being wildly outside my usual taste.

comments

"If we can't have chocolate without slavery, we shouldn't have chocolate."

"It's disgraceful that these candy companies stopped using real chocolate."

(Come to think of it, if real chocolate requires slavery, is that why Target and Baskin Robbins are now selling "Dubai chocolate"?)

comments

Look, I know she took way more shit than she deserved, and I know most of it was transphobia. But I still reserve the right to be annoyed by a self-proclaimed “forcefem” blogger who doesn’t like forcefem.

comments

I’m reading a fanfic where a half-fae dates a human and struggles to temper his fae impulses. I feel like the kink potential is enormous. If she accepts his instinct towards dominance and encourages him to vent it in a healthy way, they could do things like consensual mind control, or minor curses as a way of enforcing kinky “discipline.” (Sadly, the fic itself is solidly T-rated.)

comments

From a comment on AO3

“It gets really interesting when proofreading a story like With This Ring. The protagonist is British, and insists on using British English, and the narration is written in the first person, so that's all British. But he's living in the USA, so when he talks with someone, there's a good chance that they'll use American English, and the author has chosen to preserve that (even though yes, they sound the same). But he also has a power ring with a universal translator, so when he's talking with someone who doesn't speak English, their words will use his native British English, but if they do natively speak English, even American English, the ring won't translate that, so you still get American spellings. But some characters are capable of speaking English but it's not their first language, eg Wonder Woman's native language is Greek but she has learned American English, so you have to guess based on context (eg: Who else is present and listening? Other Justice League Members? Amazons?) whether it's being translated from Greek, and would thus get British spelling, or not.”

Now I know how other people feel when I keep messing around with pronouns.

comments

I’m playing Beyond Galaxyland, and I feel like it illustrates the boundaries of “all art is political.” Sure, this dev’s probably a RETVRN trad, and a certain tolerance for trad characters is required to put up with the game’s extended cast. But I don’t feel like the game itself is a propaganda piece so far. It’s just supposed to be an interesting story, and it allows sympathy for characters who aren’t trads.

comments
