Some people say that you are what you react to. You interact with different people, and they make you different in turn. But what if someone tells you what a black person is and must be, and makes you think all black people are like that? Then you won’t interact with black people as different people. You’ll interact with the black person you imagine in your head, modeled on the same black person imagined by the person who taught you prejudice. And because the imaginary person you and other bigots react to is the same, that makes you the same as well. So perhaps the punishment for bigotry is that it makes you boring.
