There are a surprising number of slippery slopes in persecution. People say they’re going to harass and punish group X, but promise they’re not going to harass and punish similar group Y, and every single time, they can’t tell the difference between X and Y. (E.g. “we’re not going to bully mentally ill people; we’re going to bully people who’re pretending they’re mentally ill, because obviously you can always tell the difference between someone who’s really mentally ill and someone who’s pretending!”)

I’m incredibly fortunate in that I never want to harass X or Y. If I was one of the people who wanted to harass X, I don’t know how I’d reconcile that with how Y always gets targeted.
