Oh man, this is brilliant. Books 1 and 2 of Nevermoor are kinda vague about what the Wundrous Society actually does. They’re an eclectic mix of adventurers, do-gooders, artists, politicians, and rare magical talents, and at least half of their purpose is to generate funding and goodwill for whatever the rest of their purpose is. Then in book 3, things get abruptly recontextualized:

They’re like the fantasy version of the SCP Foundation. “Containment and Distraction,” they call it, keeping all the horrible magic-spawned monsters locked down so the civvies don’t even know they exist.
