Oh man, this is brilliant. Books 1 and 2 of Nevermoor are kinda vague about what the Wundrous Society actually does. They’re an eclectic mix of adventurers, do-gooders, artists, politicians, and rare magical talents, and at least half of their purpose is to generate funding and goodwill for whatever the rest of their purpose is. Then in book 3, things get abruptly recontextualized:

Holy crap, Nevermoor is actually good. A lot of these books try to be like Harry Potter, but Nevermoor actively tries to be better than Harry Potter.

When modern children’s book writers look for an experience they think kids will relate to, they consistently come up with “being blamed for shit that’s in no way your fault.” I don’t remember nearly as much of this in pre-‘90s children’s books.
