My biggest FFXIV fishing complaint

Some fish can’t be caught directly. You have to catch a large version of a different fish, then “mooch” it to bait the first fish. There’s no way to tell whether a fish can be mooched until you catch a large one, no way to tell whether a fish is caught by mooching until you catch it, and I think some fish don’t show up as moochable because nothing at that specific fishing hole eats them. And even if you catch one moochable fish, there can be two at the same fishing hole, so you don’t know if you’re done. I need some damn hints here!

Also, I looked it up online, but I’m still not sure of the terminology. Do you “mooch” the bait fish to catch the other fish, or do you “mooch” the other fish by dangling the bait fish?

Once you learn Mooch II you stop having that problem. Which is not the primary use of that skill, but hey.

I think most people just use guides for fishing stuff, especially considering some of the ridiculous conditions big fish can get. Though the information in the guides has to have been found in the first place somehow...

terminology

I don't pay that much attention to fishing, so it's possible more Serious Fishers are weird about it for some reason, but I always heard it as "mooch with" and "mooch for", which is unambiguous.
