Holy crap, Nevermoor is actually good. A lot of these books try to be like Harry Potter, but Nevermoor actively tries to be better than Harry Potter.

I feel like “unskilled work” is a misnomer, because it’s not that the work doesn’t involve skill, it’s that the work doesn’t have standards. There are people who are way better at cooking burgers than me, but if they try to unionize, the bosses replace them with whoever else is available, because a bad cook is considered preferable to a good cook who wants sick leave.

Oh man, this is brilliant. Books 1 and 2 of Nevermoor are kinda vague about what the Wundrous Society actually does. They’re an eclectic mix of adventurers, do-gooders, artists, politicians, and rare magical talents, and at least half of their purpose is to generate funding and goodwill for whatever the rest of their purpose is. Then in book 3, things get abruptly recontextualized:
