Guy on Dreamwidth said he had “yellow fever” because women in Japanese media smile, and women in America do this “smolder” he thinks looks stupid. I’ve been thinking for days about why I find this offensive beyond the wording, and I think it’s the conflation of countries’ beauty standards with those countries’ women. Whether people in media smile doesn’t determine whether people who aren’t on camera smile.

Hmm. I think I might have mentally overcorrected for the way this guy seems to purposefully choose the most edgy wording every time he speaks in my understanding of that comment. Since he specified "at least in their media", I assumed he just meant he preferred the femininity of Asian women as it's shown in Asian media, which -- at least to me -- is #valid, and doesn't necessarily have to equal genuinely believing all Asian women are bubbly anime girls... but who the fuck knows with that guy. I try not to automatically reach for the worst interpretation, but considering his rancid political views, maybe I should learn to 🤔
