My complaint about Fran Bow is the same as my complaint about Omori—a lot of the adventures in hallucination-land don’t seem all that relevant to the issues the characters are supposed to be dealing with. Omori fights monsters based on the monsters from a video game he liked. Okay, but what does the game mean to him, and how does it relate to his situation? Fran helps a volcano reunite with his wife. Does Fran have any personal connection to the concept of spousal separation? I think End Roll pulled this off better by tying just about everything back to Russell’s trauma in some way.

Cloudflare is going with the AO3 take. “We’re not going to appoint ourselves the enforcers of what’s right or wrong.” But AO3 would still take down a fic that posted an IRL person’s home address.

Hot take inspired by a post by sigmaleph: the Infinite Loops crossover fanfic setting is fiction’s best portrayal of what a “utility monster” would look like, and the reason so much Infinite Loops fic is fucked-up beyond belief is because folks don’t really want to address or discuss that concept even while they portray it.

(Basically, every world requires a particular individual to remain alive and sane across untold eons, and if that person does horrible shit, at least the world continues to exist.)
