“This idea that "Cultural Christianity" exists makes me feel so gross like, especially from the point of view of an indigenous person? Very similar to assimilation tactics used by colonizers when they brought Christians to the Americas.”

“Idk that was like a 0/10 take on that dudes part, very white atheist kinda take imo”

This person is saying it’s a “white atheist kinda take” to tell other people their takes sound like something a white atheist would say.

Person who identifies as Jewish, celebrates Jewish holidays, and doesn’t believe in any of the religious aspects.

Person who identifies as atheist, celebrates Christian holidays, and doesn’t believe any of the religious aspects.

I maintain these are exactly the same.

Anti-AI articles: AI uses massive amounts of resources.

Pro-AI articles: data centers use massive amounts of resources, but that mostly isn’t AI.

Anti-AI posters on Tumblr: the pro-AI articles are lying. This anti-AI article specifically says AI uses massive amounts of resources.

Personally, I have no idea how to evaluate if someone’s lying about this.

I should respond to more political strategy with “I don’t know that, and neither do you.” Like that person who said the Democrats would win more elections if they called transphobes “weird.” I argued with that on linguistic grounds—if transphobes are this common, they’re the normies—but thinking about it on strategic grounds, I have no way to tell whether calling transphobes “weird” would help or not. And you don’t know that either, unless you’ve been doing opinion surveys. You’re just stating something that feels to you like it should be right, and things that feel right may or may not be right.

“The V*mpire has been nominated for a Nebula Award for Best Short Story.”

Huh. It’s not a bad story, but it’s definitely not the kind of story where I look at it and think “Nebula Award.”

“Also Nominated: Why Don’t We Just Kill the Kid in the Omelas Hole”

Well, at least it’s less shitty than what the Puppies think merits an award . . .

(If I hadn’t run out of tags, I would mark this “Feo is on thin ice.”)

People say that conservatives don’t care whether their arguments are true, but that guy on my dash who says open borders are like slavery seems to care if people agree with him. He’s behaving as if it matters whether or not people believe his stupid arguments, despite giving the sort of ridiculous conservative arguments non-conservatives normally say you’re not expected to believe.

vaguely remember an essay about a Vietnam war movie. The film depicts various atrocities like shooting children from a helicopter, but generally adopts an attitude of “Eh, what can you do?” There’s no mention of real-life groups like VVAW that tried to do something, and no indication that maybe we could not do war crimes.

I think this essay was older than the phrase “shooting and crying,” but it sums up the actual problem.

It seems to be a right-wing thing to say something offensive and go “Don’t cancel me, I’m just thinking! All I’m doing is thinking!” Left-wingers go “Don’t cancel me, I’m right!” Or sometimes “Don’t cancel me, I didn’t fucking say that!”

You can argue about what’s a good vs. bad way to meme about the Gadsden flag on the Internet. But it sounds like the people who’re deciding American presidential elections these days don’t have much overlap with the people who will ever look at your Gadsden flag meme. I’m not sure any decision you make about your Gadsden flag meme will be relevant in a practical sense.

Person A makes art. People don’t buy it.

Person B makes near-identical art. People buy it.

For some reason, people act like Person A’s lack of sales is person B’s fault.

“There's a deeply compulsive urge in a lot of White people to flay themselves open in this bizarre, uncomfortable confessional way where they just NEED Black people to forgive them for, idk, being white?? And they will openly admit to the wildest shit with the most pleading expressions and it's insane to me”

The absolute lack of self-reflection on why people who take you seriously would respond this way to your rhetoric.

I just discovered that the “unrequested poly” wank started with a request for a Steven Universe fic. Dear, I think you might be in the wrong fandom.

How the fuck is a black trans woman supporting people who use the phrase “transandrobro”? Do you not fucking get that these people think you’re basically a guy because you’re black?

I don’t think it matters whether Musk intended to do “you have my heart” or intended to do a Nazi salute. If it was a mistake, it was the kind of mistake I would grovel for. What matters now is a): how much of an apology will Musk give, and b): if he doesn’t give a decent apology, will people blow this off, or will they treat it as a huge deal?

From another post: “please understand that you won't recognize a creep the way you might think you will. If you're not the preferred prey, the hind-brain alarm won't go off. You have to listen to victims, not your gut feeling that the person seems perfectly nice and normal. It doesn't mean there's never a false accusation, but face the fact that it's usually real, and you don't have enough information to say otherwise.”

This take is too fucking useful to trust. “You can’t trust your judgment that this person isn’t a predator, because you’re not the target. I can trust my judgment that this person is a predator, because I am the target. I know I’m a target because my judgment says this person is a predator. So if I say someone’s a predator, you should shut the fuck up and agree with me.”

I’m pretty sure none of us can consistently judge who the predators are. That’s why you need to look at people’s track record, not just declare that your “hindbrain” can magically identify predators.

On Tumblr today: “trans men are predators against trans women” has evolved into “trans men aren’t actually trans.” I hate you all.

Out of all the takes I’ve seen about the mentally ill cop game, the most against-the-grain is that it likes cops. Nobody agrees with this person, and they are so mad at the rest of the fandom for being “illiterate.”

Racists love to say they’re employing “pattern recognition.” It’s a phrase they regularly come back to in order to say you’re stupid for not being racist. But they can’t recognize when the pattern fails, even when they’re directly discussing the pattern failing. E.g. a couple times now I’ve seen a pro-gay racist use discrimination against gay people as an excuse to say some group are “savages” or whatnot, without any acknowledgement that the same group they hate includes the gay people they’re supposedly defending.

“Don't treat things said to a medical professional as sincere attempts at truth-seeking. If they gave a shit about the truth they'd ask more accurate and relevant questions and wouldn't depend on a state-backed cartel to cover up their errors, if you gave a shit about the truth you'd be on wikipedia or webmd.”

You expect me to figure out what’s wrong with me from fucking WebMD? That’s why I go to doctors in the first place—to find out what’s wrong with me.
