“This idea that "Cultural Christianity" exists makes me feel so gross like, especially from the point of view of an indigenous person? Very similar to assimilation tactics used by colonizers when they brought Christians to the Americas.”

“Idk that was like a 0/10 take on that dudes part, very white atheist kinda take imo”

This person is saying it’s a “white atheist kinda take” to tell other people their takes sound like something a white atheist would say.

Person who identifies as Jewish, celebrates Jewish holidays, and doesn’t believe in any of the religious aspects.

Person who identifies as atheist, celebrates Christian holidays, and doesn’t believe any of the religious aspects.

I maintain these are exactly the same.

Time Magazine says people who want to live forever are neglecting their immortal souls. I say everyone involved in writing and publishing that article neglected their mortal brain.

Inspired by a poll about “white guy energy”: it’s striking how, when people talk about “white” negatively, their go-to example of whiter than white, the whitest you can possibly be, is Mormon. I think the concept of whiteness is associated with not doing things and not being things. If someone restricts themself from doing ordinary things because it would be lowering themself, then the more things they consider low, and the more people they consider low for doing those things, the whiter other people see them as being. This is probably why people call “diet culture” white as well.

Extremely hot take inspired by @evilsoup: I don’t believe there exist such a thing as class interests. It’s like when people assume countries or racial groups have interests. You, as an individual, are not an entire country or racial group, so things that are good or bad for them may have nothing to do with you.

On the other hand, I think the division larger than the individual that actually matters is religious interests.

For most of this game, I've been unable to tease an obvious, pat, moral out of the plot. The Taoists correctly predicted that the Sols (technology-loving atheists) would become tyrants, which would seem to be a point for the Taoists. But the ways in which the Sols went bad seem to involve mimicking Taoists. There's a Sol who believes life is suffering, a Sol who emphasizes respecting your elders, a Sol based on the philosopher who dreamt of being a butterfly . . . And of course, the protag is a Sol who's trying to fix all this and still believes in the power of rationalism and technological advancement. There's a decent chance this will stay nuanced, something that rarely happens in video games that try to have a theme.

There's also a decent chance this will end up hammering in that the one deathist Taoist was right about everything and the Sols should have just laid down and died. In which case, fuck Red Candle Games in particular.

This is one of those settings where being a Taoist gives you magic powers. The main character is a rationalist who despises religion and superstition, and I think he was a former member of a group that opposed Taoists politically. He still uses Taoist powers, because they’re not superstition if they work. I lowkey love this.

I’m reading a book called Hell Followed With Us, and I want to reproduce a very good paragraph.

I make it to the mouth of the bridge. I don’t stop, just dive between the wreckage of cars choking the entrance. The bridge shines silver, suspension towers dangling thick metal wires from bank to bank. It belongs to the Angels now. A banner flutters high above me: GOD LOVES YOU. Corpses dangle from the wires, yellow-pink organs hanging from their stomachs to obscure their nakedness, like Adam and Eve ashamed of their bodies.

Can’t do an “OC smash or pass” poll because my OC is married to Christ.

The first proposition: there will always be some percentage of exorcists who end up possessed by demons. It’s an occupational hazard.

The second proposition: demons don’t really know what evil is. They just want you to violate your principles. If your greatest guilt is wanting to kill people, you’ll kill, but if your greatest guilt is wanting to have gay sex, you’ll have gay sex.

This is why, whenever you need an exorcism, you call in the Catholics.

Umami seems to be a parody of Buddhism, but so far, it’s a lot less judgmental than what I’m used to when I talk to Buddhists. It’s very factual—these are the truths of the universe—with no attempt to defend or justify the way things are. You don’t have the power to change the cycle, but if you want to struggle against it anyway, knock yourself out.

Also, I love that it explicitly calls out mind-body dualism as bullshit.

My actual response to “atheism is a religion” is “fine, then. I’m not an atheist. I’m just a person who wants you to shut the fuck up about religion.”

These two takes seem untrustworthy and potentially dangerous to me, in the same way and for the same reason.

“Christians believe in things that are prideful and hateful, but [insert religion] believes in things that are loving and humble.”

“Men like gross, exploitative porn, but women like sweet, romantic porn.”

There’s a kind of religious fiction where the MC discovers that the Catholic church is run by power-hungry liars who’re covering up that God is okay with sex and just wants us to be nice to each other. This is ridiculous levels of cope, but I appreciate it if it gets you to stop hating gay people.

Thinking about this one Christian song I heard years and years ago. It starts off being about Abraham and Isaac. Then it starts lecturing non-Christians to stop being barbarians who sacrifice each other, because God declared human sacrifice was wrong. I don’t think it was parody, but when he went “I will kill you if I must, I will help you if I can,” I went “Jesus H. Christ.”

You know what I never see on the Internet? Psychosis positivity. I mean, every once in a while there's some post about psychosis that goes "as an ethnological curiosity, we'll mention that folks in other (not American) cultures may have more positive views of psychosis, and even have positive psychotic experiences that make them feel better instead of worse." Then they keep talking about people whose psychosis makes them feel like shit. Even on Tumblr, where you get posts from people who actually have psychosis, the best you'll get is "these are the techniques I use to reduce how shitty my psychosis makes me feel."

Eh, maybe what's at issue is my own narrow view of the world. I see plural and otherkin positivity on Tumblr. Either it's stuff I personally think is true and not psychotic, or it's stuff the people posting it think is true, so I'm not gonna insult them by calling them psychotic. Maybe actual psychosis positivity requires not caring which "truths" are provable.

(Sadly, I don't feel I can be neutral when Christian whackjobs keep trying to force the rest of us to live according to "truths" they can't prove.)

Found a post from years ago where I said Wicca and New Age are the same thing, and was informed I was factually wrong. I still don’t see the distinction. I mean, don’t Wiccans and New Agers purchase the same products from the same companies? That makes them the same, just like how people who buy from Hot Topic and think they’re goths are the same as people who buy from Hot Topic and think they’re skaters.

Remember those folks who said it was antisemitic to use the word “genocide” for killing of anyone other than Jews? Because there’s a lot of sparkling mass murder going on right now.
