I’m not going to claim to be particularly attached to Bridget, because honestly, I’ve mostly been exposed to the character from insulting jokes. But I do think there’s a larger issue with the idea of “fixing” crossdressing characters by making them trans instead. It’s like when someone decides Asian (usually Japanese) characters aren’t “of color” and redesigns them as black to “fix” them.

Tumblr user A: complains about Kiwifarms.

Tumblr user B: mocks A and accuses them of liking someone called Keffals.

Me: clueless.

News: “Keffals was ‘woken up by London Police Services pointing an assault rifle in [her] face in [her] home.’ Apparently, someone impersonating her emailed every city counselor in London, Ontario, stating she killed her mom, was in possession of an illegal firearm, and planned to ‘go to city hall and shoot every cisgender person’ there.”

Me: oh. Fuck B, then, and I guess fuck Kiwifarms for good measure.

The other day, I was reminded of this book I read years ago called Black Star Rising. It involves friendly but stupid aliens that keep finding planets where one group is oppressed by another. They always try to “help” the oppressed, but every single time, this results in the accidental annihilation of both groups. Every single time, they think they’ll do better next time and pledge to save the next oppressed group.

It just occurred to me that if you wrote this book now, people would think it was satirizing American foreign policy.
