“When I first saw this episode [The Test], my interpretation was very different from Pony's. It seemed like one of the show's big questions was the extent to which Steven could or should be like Rose. I also got the impression that Rose was the character who supported the other gems emotionally and kept them out of the various pits of despair they tended towards. Combine the two, and this episode is Steven taking his first step towards being a Rose-like figure towards the gems, which is a pretty scary position for a kid to be in towards adults. My aunt used her young daughter as a confidant and emotional pillar, and it was terrible for the kid's emotional health. My first thought upon finishing the episode for the first time was ‘this kid's going to get eaten alive.’”
Well, I called that one!

Sep. 30th, 2022 05:24 pmAn indirect thought on Steven Universe:
There was this thing on TV Tropes a while back where some people kept adding Mr. Krabs from Spongebob Squarepants to the Complete Monster page, and other people kept deleting him. The people who added him cited that he did this and that and the other that were Complete Monster things. The people who deleted him didn’t seem to think an argument was necessary. To them, it was obviously silly to call this character a Complete Monster. I’d stopped watching Spongebob at this point, but it felt strange to me that people didn’t even conside it worth addressing whether the character’s behavior could actually merit the Complete Monster tag.
I’m one of the people who argues that Homeworld in Steven Universe does some spectacularly messed-up things, in ways that go beyond the usual cartoon villainy. The general response to this is “you’re crazy.” I feel like I’d be more satisfied with it if the argument was more “Homeworld really isn’t that different from a lot of other cartoon villains,” and to be fair, I do see that sometimes. But more often, the reaction is that it’s too stupid to bother arguing with, and that just annoys me.
(TBF, I also disagree with the folks who compare the Diamonds to Nazis. The Diamonds are a hybrid of multiple different kinds of terrible government, from kleptocracy to Communist dictatorship, without clearly matching any one real-life society.)

Jun. 23rd, 2022 04:20 amMy issues with Steven Universe run so much shallower than the “SU critical” crowd. They post all this stuff about race and class and sex and what SU says about them, and I don’t think SU said most of those things, not even accidentally or in passing. In fact, I think SU said the exact opposite of some of the things it’s criticized for.
My issue with SU is that I think it needed to either ditch the ending, or else ditch Keeping It Together. Keeping It Together, specifically, went a thousand times harder than it needed to, and even though it’s one of my favorite episodes, it casts a shadow over every other episode involving the Diamonds. SU could still have Nightmare Hospital, and a slightly modified Gem Drill, as long as it didn’t have Keeping It Together.

Jun. 30th, 2021 02:04 amSeriously, you have no idea how many Steven Universe ending posts I’m sparing you. I’ve thought of doing “the Steven Universe ending is bad, contrasted with the ending of Omensight.” I’ve thought of doing “the Steven Universe ending is bad for the same reason some critics didn’t like the endings of The Babadook and The Cabin in the Woods.” The sky’s the limit.

Jun. 7th, 2021 03:15 pmI saw an essay once that argued that shows like She-Ra allow for the redemption of villains by not actually showing that much villainy. We see Hordak’s followers destroying buildings civilians live in, but we don’t see them directly murdering civilians, so Hordak doesn’t have to face audience judgment for it.
On the one hand, this makes it sound like Steven Universe really dug its own grave by showing onscreen medical experimentation on POWs. On the other hand, I never got the impression that She-Ra fandom was any less of a screaming mess than Steven Universe fandom. So maybe the mess in both fandoms is unrelated to war crimes or lack thereof.

Mar. 27th, 2020 05:24 pmReading a liveblog of Steven Universe.
“He’s been through so much. We’ve been through so much. Is this the point where it gets to be too much for us, the audience?”
Well, speaking for myself, it was already too much for me before the last season finale. That’s why I’m reading a liveblog instead of actually watching the show.

I'll never leave I'll never stray
My love for you will never change
But I ain't ready to make up
We'll get around to that
I think I'm right I think you're wrong
I'll probably give in before long
Please don't make me smile
I just wanna be mad for a while
