Nov. 13th, 2022 04:34 amI’m big on suspension of disbelief as a contract between artist and audience. I look at David J. Prokopetz’s consciously fictional, self-referential work, and I want to write something that’s not that.
Prokopetz has talked about how other people design unpleasant, emotionally invasive games that seem tailor-made to induce trauma flashbacks, and how he would rather make games about “jellyfish committing tax fraud.” I think the tabletop game DIE is a good example of his not that.
I don’t know enough about tabletop games to say if DIE is a reaction to anything. But one of the people involved in it is Kieron Gillen, and I know his comic book Three is a not that to 300.
Let’s continue the chain. What’s Frank Miller’s not that?
(Funnily enough, you could also continue the chain backwards. Dan Shive has talked about how Frank Miller is his not that, which presumably makes Shive and Gillen soulmates.)
