Sep. 15th, 2023 01:45 pm“For better or worse, I was wrong about you. I look at the things we have to fight, and I think we’re probably gonna die. I figured you were putting on a brave face, and I worried what you would do when you couldn’t keep looking brave all the time. But it’s not a face, it’s just you. No matter what we’re up against, you’re a hundred percent certain you can win.”
“So you’re not scared anymore?”
“I’m more scared than ever. I always think we’re outclassed, and you always think we aren’t, and you’ve always been right so far. When we really are outclassed, will you be able to tell?”

Sep. 15th, 2023 02:56 pmMy dream app that I will never actually make for a million reasons: Impartial, the app for political organizing. With a paid subscription, you can create a political organization and post when and where it will meet for what purposes. With a free account, you can browse meetings and decide what to attend. Anyone can use Impartial, even if they’re not a registered political party, e.g. dog breeders meeting to discuss upcoming dog-related legislation.
What about illegal content?
Impartial will remove anything found to be illegal in its country of origin, though it’ll need to rely on user reports to catch everything. Moreover, nothing stops cops from reading Impartial and arresting your ass.
What about legal content by terrible people?
It stays. Again, cops can read Impartial, and so can counter-protesters. If your “legal” meetup is secretly for something illegal, and you have a reputation for lawbreaking, cops may show up to check on you, and Impartial will neither encourage nor stop them. If your legal meetup is for something lots of people are mad about, you may find yourself outnumbered.
What about content by good people who’ll get harassed by a critical mass of assholes?
Impartial isn’t for every meetup. Secret meetings are better served by other methods.
What about impersonators? Like someone who says they’re the official Democratic Party when they’re not?
Against Impartial’s terms of service. Please report.
What about people who say they’re going to have a political meeting, but sell essential oils to anyone who shows up?
Lifetime ban.
Will this actually turn a profit?
Probably not, which is one reason I’m not trying to make it.
So what do you think? Are you partial to Impartial?
(If anyone’s actually doing this, please let me know. I couldn’t find a political board on Craigslist.)

Sep. 15th, 2023 11:40 pmMy central problem with the Dark Forest Hypothesis is that its proponents keep jumping the is-ought gap.
“It’s natural for aliens to hate you, so you should hate aliens.” How does what’s “natural” have anything to do with what you should do?
“Aliens would kill you, so you should kill aliens.” There are humans who think I should die, but I don’t want them dead because of that.
“An alien would never love you, so it’s nonsensical to love aliens.” Spiders don’t love me either, but that doesn’t make me fantasize about all-out war against spiders.
In the end, I think the “oughts” reveal the true reasoning. It’s not that these people believe in hostile aliens and propose action based on it. It’s that they really want to commit genocide and come up with an argument to make it “logical.”
