Dec. 3rd, 2024 05:41 pmThe problem with the zero-worldbuilding it’s-just-Dragon-Quest-anyway approach is that sometimes worldbuilding matters. I’m reading Slime Saint, and it does not want to establish jack or shit. Why are slimes feared and hated? Because it’s assumed non-“monsters” hate “monsters” in a setting like this. What even are the “saints”? Just assume they do whatever a healer/cleric does in a setting like this. It’s not just lazy, it’s unmoored, because there’s no real framework for the stakes, the challenges, or what will ultimately become of the protagonist.
