That’s because having lost the War of Secession, the South was nonetheless treated and regarded as a foreign country anyway, and removed from consideration - and the history books - by the United States and their government. 

One of the most blatant examples is the American Revolutionary War.  Lexington!  Valley Forge!  Yay!  Cowpens!  … What?  Sullivan’s Island!  … What??  Then and in the War of 1812, some serious pitched battles were fought in the Southern States.  You couldn’t name a one of them on a bet.  They did not happen, in our country.
