The premise behind Towayami is that you’re stuck in a town where no light can ever shine. Everyone is hopeless and miserable, people keep going missing, and you seem to be the only one searching for a way out. You can get killed in a variety of ways that seem almost contradictory, like you’re dealing with different kinds of monsters with different natures and abilities.
It turns out the elders believed a prophecy that darkness would cover the world. They transported the town to an alternate dimension controlled by thoughts and fears, and since they were afraid of darkness, darkness immediately covered the town. The townsfolk are scared and don’t understand what’s happening, so their fear and confusion creates monsters.
In the end, you get a once-in-a-lifetime chance to escape back to Earth, but you can’t take anyone else with you. I chose to stay with my family, and got a miserable ending where I gave into despair.
The dev misses the obvious. If fear creates monsters, then stop being afraid. Teach the townsfolk to embrace the peace and comfort of the darkness. This world could be a paradise if you let it!
