In Arknights, elves are incredibly vulnerable to Originium particles. (Think coal smoke, but in a society where coal is the primary power source.) But most of them refused to live in isolation when there was a bigger world out there. They went out, they took precautions, and sooner or later, the precautions failed and they died. I don’t think the elves were intended as a metaphor for anything. But as an immunocompromised person, I think of them when I go outside in the post-COVID era.
