Years ago, I read this book where the villain brainwashes women to make them happily submissive and obedient. After he's defeated, he gives the hero a lecture about how the villain is a "Northerner" who thinks about whether something's okay, then does it because it is okay, while the hero is a "Southerner" who has an emotional reaction to people doing something, then tries to stop them from doing it even though it's logically okay. I still haven't figured out how a "Southerner" is supposed to be the one who opposes slavery.
