There are two kinds of sarcasm. One kind is marked by the words it uses, with judicious placement of “well” and “just” and such to show you’re being sarcastic. (As I’ve said before, a sincere “Wow, that was awesome!” converts to a sarcastic “Well, that was just swell!”) The other kind of sarcasm uses exactly the same words as the first kind, but expresses an idea so strong and so silly that it’s supposed to be obvious no one would seriously say that. You may go on for several sentences to rub it in. (“That was unbelievably awesome! I cannot believe that just happened to us! That was almost as much fun as watching paint dry!”)

The second type of sarcasm is pretty rare on the Internet these days, at least in pure text form. I think that’s because the new standard is to show a soyboy Wojack saying it.

I once saw tragedy compared to a falling avalanche. I think tragedy is more like a screw in wood, slowly turning tighter and tighter and tighter as the wood cracks and buckles.

(This post is inspired by the Twilight of Wolumonde event in Arknights, which is very good at conveying the sense that the screw is getting tighter.)

When women first alleged that Chris Avellone got drunk and groped them, I was kind of impressed that he didn’t defend himself and said he deserved to be canceled. It seemed like a more honest path than the usual “those women are all liars.” Now he’s finally going for “those women are all liars,” and I’m not mad, just disappointed.
