Jun. 28th, 2021 06:52 amThere are two kinds of sarcasm. One kind is marked by the words it uses, with judicious placement of “well” and “just” and such to show you’re being sarcastic. (As I’ve said before, a sincere “Wow, that was awesome!” converts to a sarcastic “Well, that was just swell!”) The other kind of sarcasm uses exactly the same words as the first kind, but expresses an idea so strong and so silly that it’s supposed to be obvious no one would seriously say that. You may go on for several sentences to rub it in. (“That was unbelievably awesome! I cannot believe that just happened to us! That was almost as much fun as watching paint dry!”)
The second type of sarcasm is pretty rare on the Internet these days, at least in pure text form. I think that’s because the new standard is to show a soyboy Wojack saying it.
