I’ve only used her once, but at some point, I want to bring back my villain Goldie. She’s a career criminal in a superhero setting, dabbling in many things, but focused on stealing high-value items, often working together with teams of other non-powered criminals. Her main interests are hedonism and the money to support that hedonism, but she avoids anything that’s addictive or impairs her thinking.

[Portrait of the Hero, referred to hereafter as just “Hero”]: You’ve nowhere left to run, Minion! Tell me where the Dark Wizard is hiding!

[Portrait of the Minion]: I’ll tell you nothing. For my master, I fear not even death!

An animation shows the minion drinking a potion and collapsing. You can exit the scene, but if you examine the body:

[New portrait of the Minion on the floor]: Dead.

Examine again.

[Minion]: Still dead.

Successive examines.

[Minion]: Dead as a doornail.

[Minion]: Ex-living.

[Minion]: Resting for eternity.

[Minion]: Will soon draw flies.

[Minion]: I’m dead! Stop examining my body!

One more examine. The Hero kicks the body.

[Minion]: Agh! How’d you know I wasn’t dead?

[Hero]: Did you know you were talking out loud?

Last night’s dream: a sci-fi RPG where one of the level-up feats was “Escape Pod.” If your poor decisions accidentally killed someone who could have been a party member, this feat would reveal they actually survived and their escape pod was floating in space. You could take this multiple times, depending on how bad your judgment was.

Horrible idea: one of those VNs where the FMC expects her boyfriend to do all the fighting, except she sees it as her job to teach him how to fight. She still thinks she can’t fight even while she clearly knows more about it than he does. Just a Pokémon trainer dynamic.

“Don’t know what to feel . . .”

“You’re singing?”

“I’m writing a song. When I was picking apples earlier, I figured out how to start it. This place is so strange. Now I’ve got another line. Don’t know what to feel.

“Huh. Any plans for the third line?”

“Not yet. Maybe I’ll figure something out tomorrow. I’ll have a lot of time to think while we’re fixing up the barn.”

“Wait. You’re singing a song.”

“I’m writing a song.”

“One line at a time.”

“Yes.”

“While doing a bunch of different activities.”

“Yes.”

“Are you montaging?”

“Don’t worry about it.”

There’ve been too many games that are like movies except “your choices matter,” so the characters portentously monologue about how life is full of choices that matter. I want a movie that’s like a game except there are no choices, and the characters portentously monologue about how they have no choices.

I had a dream about a wicked spirit that asks you what you wish for. If you answer, it doesn't grant your wish. It forces you to attempt to carry out your own wish, regardless of whether or not this is remotely possible for you. It may help you in doing so, but it's more likely to actively hinder you, according to its own whims. You don't want to know what it does if you tell it to go fuck itself.

This is probably the closest thing I've ever come up with to something David Prokopetz would write.

“Did it work? Am I finally there?”

“Hoy, traveler! It’s been a long time since anyone last came. I was wondering if there was even a point to guarding this gate anymore.”

A third voice interjects. “Travelers come here all the time! We had one just yesterday!”

“Ignore him,” the first guard says. “The other guard always lies.”

“It’s real,” the traveler says to himself. “All this time … It’s real.”

“Most visitors react like that,” the first guard says. “Welcome to Philosophia, the land where all thought experiments live! Now, before you pass the gate, I need to check you for contraband. In the past, we had some issues with time bombs …

By the time the inspection finishes, the traveler has regained some of his composure. “I don’t know what I’ll do now,” he admits. “I only thought about finding Philosophia, not about what I would do afterward.”

“Why, enjoy the sights, of course! Liar guard, can you handle the gate for a while?”

“Of course I can’t! I need your help to keep Philosophia safe!”

“You’re such a kidder. Walk with me, traveler.”

Past the gate, a thriving city, its architecture a mishmash of different times and places.

“On your left is the track,” the guard explains. “Achilles is racing a tortoise right now. No one is sure who’ll win. And over there is the Pin, our local dance hall. Some angels are hosting a competition soon.”

“I’m not much for athletics,” the traveler admits.

“Few of our visitors are. Well, if you prefer to train your mind, the observatory is up on that hill. They’re having a lecture tonight on astral teapots. Oh, and just across the street there, you can see one of our many theaters. Plato’s Cave. They perform shadow puppetry.”

“Why is there such a long line for the theater?” the traveler asks.

“Their new playwright is quite popular. No one knows who he is. He always signs his name as “an infinite number of monkeys,” but surely that’s just a joke. Anyway, there can’t be many tickets left, so if you want to see it, you’ll have to hurry. Wait, look before you cross the–”

Ding ding!

*Wham*

“Damn. We’ve got to fix the brakes on that trolley.”

A sequel to this.

-- -- -- --

All the lights are off inside the mansion, but so is the alarm system. That in and of itself makes Tom wary. Who brings a million-dollar painting into their home, then forgets to set the alarm? But he doesn't begin to panic until his eyes adjust enough to see the woman sitting in the parlor, silently waiting.

"You know, you keep asking why I don't ditch you for one of the bigger hero orgs."

"That's not what I mean, Josh, and you know it. It's just . . ." Kay sighs. Josh told her once that she makes the same sighing noise as the people on television, whatever that means. "I don't have powers, or wealth, or a metal exoskeleton. Sometimes I wonder if I'm holding you back. Most people think I'm your sidekick or something."
