The Yakuza RPG is very straight and very, very cis. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is kinda genderqueer, but almost as straight as Darling in the Franxx.

It’s interesting comparing how the Arknights protagonists interact with other people. Amiya’s magic empath powers tell her what other people are feeling, but she can guess wrong at what they want, like when she tried to comfort the dying Patriot and just made him angry. Doctor doesn’t seem to read people’s emotions that well, but they’re good at logicing how people will react to situations based on their history and motivations. Kal’tsit hasn’t shown any unusual talent for either, but she’s clearly making an effort anyway, given how many operators she’s mentored.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is so angry and so heartfelt, I feel like it has to be a metaphor for something, but I have no idea what. Usually when I don’t get what a Japanese story is angry about, it’s grappling with the legacy of World War II, but “child soldiers realize the people who’re ordering them to fight are literally the same people on both sides” doesn’t sound like World War II specifically.
