Oct. 5th, 2022 08:06 pmI never really understood how to write music. There’s a C key on the piano, and a D key, and an E key, and so on, and all of them make different sounds, and you’re supposed to memorize which keys make the sound you want to play next. But there’s also a C key an octave lower, and a C key an octave higher, and while there’s probably a way in which they’re both essentially C, to me they sound like unique sounds, and I would have to memorize those as well for when I want those sounds. And then sometimes you press C and E at the same time, and I guess another person would be able to hear and think of that as the “combination” of C and E, but to me, that’s another unique sound that needs to be memorized. And then there are the times when you press three keys at once, and it all seems like too much for my brain to hold.
I have a similar sort of awe towards people who can write subplots. Some novelists just keep coming up with new POVs and new character goals that interact with the previous ones, and I have a hard enough time interweaving the lives of two or three characters, let alone a dozen.
