Those posts about how you can’t do such-and-such in “published” fiction and can only do it in fanfiction give me the spiteful impulse to do all those things in original work, just to prove it’s doable.

I just saw a post saying you can’t have graphic robot sex in “published” fiction.

The challenge has been laid. I may or may not be brave enough to claim it.

Thinking about Recettear again. I remember someone complaining about how following Tear’s advice will probably give you a game over, but I feel like it’s thematically important? Tear wants you to soak every customer for as much as you can get away with, because she thinks that’s how business works. But you do a lot better if you consistently give customers fair prices that they’re happy with. These people initially come in and browse with small amounts of cash on hand, just curious to see what you have. If you’re good to them, they start coming back to you specifically and saving up to buy your higher-end wares.
