A memory from Cub Scouts: some scouts performed a skit making fun of homeless people. Another scout modified it to make fun of gay people instead, but was interrupted and told that was inappropriate. As a kid, I didn’t understand why either was inappropriate. As an adult, they both seem bigoted.

People often say that prison abolitionists have no answer for how to handle rapists. A couple times, I’ve seen prison abolitionists reply that this doesn’t matter. Most rapists aren’t imprisoned, so it’s irrelevant that they don’t have a method to stop rapists either. In effect, these people treat rapists as just a normal part of life.

When people argue that death is a bad thing, a common response is that death is just a normal part of life.

I can’t actually draw a meaningful throughline between these two positions, but I’m angry and frustrated, so I’m going to pretend they’re comparable.

I don’t know enough about him to know if he’d actually do this, but it would be a massive W if DeSantis went “These people online are calling me a female werewolf because they think it would be funny to hear me deny it. Whatever. Vote Female Werewolf.”

I think I’ve already complained about shitty het rivalmance in published novels, but here I am complaining about it again. If you’re going to have your viewpoint character be attracted to someone, please come up with any reason other than “they’re physically attractive and continuously disrespect me.” At least fanfic rivalmance knows to tone down the assholishness sometimes!

In a thread on Spacebattles, I said I find the Legion from Fallout: New Vegas to be a more satisfying villain faction than the Institute from Fallout 4. The Legion kills people for its (stupid) ideology, while the Institute kills people because it’s too apathetic to overcome its own bureaucratic inertia. Someone replied that he prefers the Institute because apathy and bureaucratic inertia are why governments kill people in real life. I think about that a lot.

I see Tumblr post after Tumblr post about how stories should be analyzed as things written by authors, and I’m over here going “If you think to analyze my stories as something written by an author, I’ve failed as a writer.” My ultimate goal is to create something that doesn’t feel like it had an author.

I was going to argue that “the minority members who disagree with me aren’t actually minority members” is a sign of a terrible, terrible take. Then I remembered “political lesbians,” non-lesbians who view actual lesbians as embarrassing perverts. I withdraw my criticism.

(I’ve also heard of “Messianic Jews,” but I try to avoiding talking about those anymore.)
