I don’t point out nearly as often as I used to that the Not-Cops people propose to have after the Revolution sound like they’d have to be cops in order to function. And I haven’t really argued with the people who think they can replace teachers with Not-Teachers. But doctors? Fucking doctors? There is no damn way you can fulfill the role of a Not-Doctor with anything but a doctor.

If this weren’t YA, the girl the MC is absolutely devoted to and would kill anyone to protect would be the love interest, and I’d be here for it. But in YA, I’m afraid it’s going to be the guy who pretends to be an asshole to hide how empathetic he is. Then again, I suppose a high-empathy person pretending to be low-empathy would be a fun opposites-attract with a low-empathy person pretending to be high-empathy . . .
