Stop cycling already.
You think you can only do harm, so you do harm, so you think you’ve proved yourself right because you only did harm, so you stick with the harm. If you can just hold off and stop setting fire to everything good in your life, you’ll find that a lot of people are happy to have you around. And if you think you’ve “tricked” them, that doesn’t matter. You can keep “tricking” them, so they’ll keep being happy, so you can “trick” them some more. It’ll continue indefinitely so long as you don’t decide to “end the trick” and hurt them in the name of not hurting them.

Oct. 7th, 2023 06:28 pmShort story I vaguely remember from one of Gardner Dozois's old "best science fiction of the year" anthologies. An astronaut meets one of the aliens who used to keep humanity as pets, and she's instinctively drawn to it. It headpats her, then sends her away, because the aliens feel they stifled humanity's development and want them to someday be equals. She understands why, but she returns home to her dog, because she could never abandon her own pet like that.
I read this years before I knew what a puppy-girl was.

Oct. 7th, 2023 06:36 pmAnnoyed at the aliens/vague "indigenous" metaphors in one of those stories on the Tor website. They destroy everything they've built every few generations, because they don't want to be chained to the past. They see the multicultural liberals/vague white metaphors as chained "Hoarders."
To put it another way, they think holding a tradition across generations and never letting it be broken means they're not chained.
