This is only the second "cultivator" series I've watched/read, so I don't know if this is a trend or just a coincidence. But in both this show and that book about the god of trash collecting, there's this expectation that the common person will never, ever self-sacrifice. Any time the unnamed masses are in a position where they risk negative consequences, they will shamelessly do anything to escape, whether that means pleading for help, running away, or making sure other people get hurt in their place. They can be nice or helpful, but only when they don't stand to lose anything.

By the end of the trash collector book, I wanted the whole setting to collapse into the underworld. Let's see how I end up feeling about this show.

A realization: Homura’s greatest goal in life, which he ultimately achieves, is to be the Catcher in the Rye.

I get that we’re going to endlessly legislate whether people’s Disney fanfics or whatever the fuck are “pedo porn” for the rest of my lifespan. But can we at least stop legislating what’s “incest porn”? I mean, “this person is a pedophile” is used to mean “this person will molest some hypothetical kid unless we imprison them.” But I’ve never seen “this person ships incest” used as an accusation that the person has or will molest any of their relatives. The only incest-related consequence I’ve ever seen proposed was a tweet claiming incest porn was why people elected that one politician who allegedly had sex with his sister, and that tweet was roundly mocked.
