Since people are talking about magical realism: there’s a certain kind of story, and it’s not all of magical realism, but it’s at least a subset. And that story is this might as well happen.

I think it came from technological progress, and maybe social movements. There are things that are happening that seemed impossible to you when you were younger, but everyone just accepts them, and you’re supposed to accept them too. So you write about impossible things that everyone just accepts. Questioning it would be pointless, because apparently the universe just does this now.

And this is why I was so frustrated with that one person who repeatedly told me that if I don’t like Scott Pilgrim, I dislike the fundamental concept behind magical realism as a genre.

The ritual doesn’t require a circle. Actually, the ritual doesn’t require anything except inhuman focus and willpower. But painting puts into perspective why I’m doing this. So in this isolated storage room in a forgotten corner of the landship, I draw a borrowed paintbrush across the floor, marking my separation from the rest of the world in an unbroken ring of red.
