My mother’s family keeps producing the same type of person, and I don’t know why. They’re very generous, sometimes even when you tell them to stop, so it’s easy to find yourself being generous right back. Then you find out what they’re saying behind your back. Any time you have a conflict with them, they distort the situation so it sounds like they have no power and you’re inflicting your will to harm them. They don’t come out and tell you they have a problem with you; they just get ready to jettison you for the next sympathetic person they can give and receive generosity to.

This might sound petty, but it can get pretty bad. When cousin A dropped off niece B with my parents, she didn’t want and couldn’t handle a child, but she later fed B some line about how she wanted B back but my parents wouldn’t give her back. A made it sound like she had no power to claim custody of B, and my parents were inflicting their will by holding B hostage . . . for some reason.

Come to think of it, all these people have been female. Maybe there’s a gendered expectation that they can’t show power or directly express displeasure?
