I once saw a study that got the same effect from traditional acupuncture and from putting the pins in randomly. I’m skeptical that people need to know the traditional background of how smoke was used in order to get whatever benefits smoke provides.

Well, you distinguish between "traditional acupuncture" and "just putting the pins in randomly". I think those two are less distinct than "does this have drums/dancing/is part of a specific ceremony?"
