A memory from back when I was trying to get published: I was a big fan of Annie on My Mind, in which modern teenagers showcase the lesbian obsession with the concept of knighthood. So I had the gender-ambiguous protagonist of a short story semi-jokingly talk in an excessively formal tone to the girl they were trying to woo, referring to her as “my lady.” At the time, I had no idea about the *tips fedora* m’lady meme.
