It would be fun to create one of those settings that’s lined up to make “ought” out of “is,” and then refuse to let that happen. Like, you know those noxious settings where male and female are objective spiritual things, and everyone is one or the other, and there’s stuff like “men’s magic” and “women’s magic” that only one can use? I want to create a transgender character in one of those settings, and have my story validate her even if the will of magic refuses to. Even if the universe insists she is a guy, that doesn’t automatically mean she ought to act as one, and her choices are just as valid as any other.
