Blood is Mine is an awesome comic and you should read it.
I criticized that one Rationalist fanfic, The World As It Appears to Be, for the way the interesting initial conflicts were discarded as bigger but less interesting conflicts replaced them. Blood is Mine makes a great contrast, because the initial stakes get subsumed, not discarded. It starts as Jane and Michelle fighting monsters, and it progresses as a bigger group fights bigger monsters and even more monstrous people. It does lose a little of the horror tone as Jane gets more and better ways to hurt these things, but it still finds ways to have her outgunned against some truly gnarly foes.
One warning: the author had to cap it off with a text summary when he wasn’t able to properly finish it. Think Xenogears with the Exposition Chairs. It’s still a pretty conclusive and satisfying ending, though, even in abbreviated form.
