To the extent that the widely spread, widely varying Tinkers have a distinct culture, it’s one that’s lost track of its ability to respect and see value in people who are different. Parasites are the “other” who enslaved the Earth, so if you’re also considered “other,” you’re liable to be viewed as part and parcel with the enslavers. Even Tinkers can be “other” to Tinkers who see them as having modified in the wrong way.
Tinkers are defined by their embrace of cybernetics, and older or more radical Tinkers are barely recognizable as human.
To some extent, these traits counter each other.
Some Tinkers don’t care about the design needs to make buildings accessible to heavy races like Builders, seeing it as meaningless work that only accommodates “others.” Tinkers with heavy augmentations recognize the problem and relate to Builders’ complaints. Some Tinkers don’t care about the needs of amphibious races like Stewards, but there are Tinkers who get amphibious mods for jobs that require being underwater. More than any other race, even actual shapeshifters like Scrappers and Winnowers, Tinkers have the potential to transform themselves. That gives them a chance to recognize the things that are the same between all races that invent rocket science.
Someday, Nomads will eclipse Tinkers in their self-identity as the soldier race. There are a lot of things that could come out of this, but the best would be for Tinkers to become a race of ambassadors and arbitrators. They’ll see from all perspectives and render fair judgment.
(The Tinkers who refuse to let go of their xenophobia will react to this in ways that make the Tinker-Pure split look tame.)
