I recently played a mediocre video game where the MC fights a sea monster. It makes you hallucinate your dead loved ones so it can lure you in and eat you. At the end, he makes up a story about most of the crew being killed in an accident, because if he talks about a sea monster, people will think he’s crazy. I think this is kind of a dumb ending, because “something in the region caused the entire crew to hallucinate” is already a decent cover story! I mean, he has audio recordings showing that numerous experienced crew members with no prior history of mental illness thought dead people were talking to them. Just say you can’t give an account of what happened, because you were affected by whatever hit everyone else, and you were barely aware of what was going on around you.
