I don’t think the writers for Carmen Sandiego had a consistent idea of Gray’s worldview and way of thinking, so you have to do some tinkering to make him a character and not just a plot device. My idea is that he fundamentally doesn’t give a shit. Life is meaningless and death is inevitable, so he finds artificial purpose in the “game” of stealing artifacts. Death just means leaving the game a little early, so he’s ready to die or kill.
This is why mind control shakes him up so much. You’re still in the game, but fundamentally subverted as a player, and to him, that’s worse than death.
