feotakahariI think rhythmic prose doesn’t have “silent beats” in the same way as rhythmic music.
I got to thinking about this because of a song called I’ve Been Everywhere, Man. While trying to rewrite the lyrics to be less annoying, I realized the comma between “Everywhere” and “Man” acts as a silent beat when sung out loud. But if I write the text “I’ve been everywhere, man,” the comma is just a pause, not a beat. At least in my mind, the rhythm continues after the pause.
Does this make sense to anyone else?
BTW, a hyphen like this—that’s roughly equivalent to a record scratch. Use sparingly.
