I once read a story called Horrer Hows, and I found myself fascinated by the monsters. They clearly understood both human speech and human writing, and they desired to mimic it for no readily apparent reason other than that they could. What sort of language did they speak, before they first met humans? Where did they come from, anyway? What motivated them besides food and shelter? Did they have a culture? Art?
But Horrer Hows didn't want to be a story about these things. What it wanted to be was a story about people dying horribly.
I have some of the same disconnect with harem manga, where I'm interested in the world that's being depicted, and the author is using the world to justify the harem antics that are the real focus of the story. But I can at least understand the appeal there. I don't find any appeal in people screaming and begging as they're tortured to death, and no matter how much a horror premise interests me, I'm reluctant to get into it before I know what the real focus is.
