I get that perpetually serious liberals on the Internet no longer like “X-men minorities.” They shit on Zootopia for being about animals instead of black people, and they shit on Brand New Animal for being about animals instead of black people, and come to think of it, do liberals not like furries anymore? But I still think there’s value in separating bigotry out from real-life contexts, the better to put it under a microscope. How many movies would actually have gotten away with examining blackness as thoroughly as Shrek examines ogre-ness? Sorry to Bother You, yes, but people didn’t so much watch Sorry to Bother You as talk about how great it would probably be if they bothered watching it. Spike Lee gets awards, but Shrek gets eyeballs, and that has to count for something.
