I’m reading Veilfall: A Rousing Redemption

Hey, if Sigma wasn’t gonna read it, I might as well try it.

It has a really flat, straightforward writing style. I feel like I’m reading a fan translation of a light novel. That makes it hard to tell whether or not it’s well-written, which worries me a bit. I have a history of reading pornographic works where I couldn’t tell whether they were well-written or not, and in the past, they’ve done really creepy things with dubcon that got stuck in my brain as intrusive thoughts for a few days after. Still, this one hasn’t had anything too creepy so far, so I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

Ugh, and now it has really weird incest where I can’t classify whether it’s consensual or nonconsensual. Why do these stories that have the flat writing style always go in this direction eventually?

It does feel like the author is trying to set it up so that the rapists are the bad guys and the folks who have consensual sex are the good guys. It’s just that some of the situations that lead to the good guys having sex are hard to set up in a fully consensual way, so they go through some weird plot contrivances that don’t always feel justified.

(Still, the villains are definitely set apart from the heroes in the nature and scale of what they do. Then the villains get smashed into bloody chunks, and I can’t help but find it grimly satisfying.)
