On the route where I first encountered Betty, she was a friendly, innocuous healer, if a bit overly devoted to her brother Lance. I had no idea why her class and skill flavor texts had ominous lines about how she used magic selfishly and commanded others to die for her own sake. She sided against me in the end, but that was just because Lance had reasons to oppose me, and she was sticking by him.
On the next route, Lance died, and since I was the nearest charismatic male, she latched onto me like a lamprey. She encouraged me to have a cause and pursue it, but seemed indifferent to how I went about that cause, so long as she could follow in my wake. She meekly accepted my growing violence, and when I had her murder her friends, she admitted she felt nothing. Her response to every further atrocity was simply to say that she’d keep following my orders.
It seems like Betty would follow a good leader, a bad one, or anyone in between. So what would happen to her if she had no leader to follow? What would the human mirror reflect, if there was no one to reflect in it? If you could answer this question, you’d have a much more interesting game than Langrisser 1.
(I hear one of the Disgaea games has a character like this. She ends up “serving” a pack of stray cats, because they demand food and attention, but never ask her to think for herself.)
