Thinking back on Wrath of the Righteous. I think the best thing it does, artistically, is create a setting where it’s plausible for characters to side with demons. If you’re a civilian, and you live in an area that’s been fought over for a hundred years, you’re going to see both factions as the people who invade your land, burn your homes, and steal your crops. It’s easy to think there’s no objective difference between the two, so when the demons promise to help you and protect you, you think you’re at least getting a benefit for yourself and your family. Then when you realize these people literally eat babies, it’s too late to back out.
