I think for some series, describing the female characters as butch or femme is fundamentally misunderstanding the dimensions their aesthetic operates in. Like, there’s a line you can draw with the characters at various points on it, but the ends of it have very different labels from what you’re talking about.
The obvious example of this is RWBY, but I think Pokémon has some of this as well. That’s how you end up with that person who called Lillie a tomboy.
