Another Crab’s Treasure is so much more cynical than the dev’s previous game, Going Under. More antagonists seem beyond even a theoretical possibility of redemption, and there’s more emphasis on hating them rather than just dealing with them as obstacles. Everything the main character tries to do ends with more deaths, and the cast as a whole would arguably have been better off if he was torn apart before ever making it to the city. The coming apocalypse seems to be an objective truth of the universal cycle, and the character who’s most in tune with the cycle is a vengeful misanthrope drowning in feelings of blind vengeance. The ending tries to be hopeful, but it’s hard to see any kind of future in this setting.
