Ultimately, the thing that keeps me from getting into Show By Rock is that I think characters should win a fight because it makes sense for them to win based on their abilities and strategies. In a lot of anime targeted at young people, characters win because it's the right time in the episode for them to win.

This was actually a grievance I picked up from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, of all things. Sometimes when she got her ass kicked, I would go "she's used moves before that would probably let her win this, but she's not using them now because it's not the right time in the episode."

Show By Rock has fights? I thought it was about bands doing music.

(And I know these aren't mutually exclusive, but like, I haven't heard of anything combat-related in this anime.)

Yeah, the evil producer basically zombifies people and sics them on musicians who won’t join his label.
