This is surreal. Mecha novels tend to be either “anime as fuck” or “basically just the Vietnam War.” This is a completely generic American hard science fiction novel of big ideas and beige prose. Isaac Asimov could have written something like this, if Asimov wrote a freaking mecha novel.

I’d like to propose that the loot treadmill might fit the tone of children’s mecha anime, where every episode introduces a new accessory to purchase from toystores near you.
