A terrible, terrible analogy.

I have no emotional connection to Harry Potter, so it’s easy for me to dismiss someone who says “my Harry Potter A/B/O fanfic with 50 views on AO3 doesn’t support J.K. Rowling.” I could say “stop writing it anyway” and not feel bad, because I wouldn’t write it. I try to remind myself that they’re actually right, and that even if their fic isn’t “important,” there’s no harm if they keep writing it.

I have no emotional connection to gun collecting, so it’s easy for me to dismiss someone who says “my unloaded gun on a display rack doesn’t kill people” . . .

Okay, so there’s this old video called Nerf Gun Control:

The joke is that all of the bad arguments for not taking away the nerf gun are also bad arguments for not taking away real guns, because arguments against gun control are all bad, hardy har har. But one of the arguments is that the problem isn’t the nerf gun, the problem is that this one employee is an obnoxious twit. Without the gun, he’ll just find some other way to be annoying. And I’m like, “Hold up! You can’t just skip past that like it’s not a valid argument!”

“I don’t trust these ‘assault rifle’ bans. People keep changing their definition of ‘assault rifle’ to mean anything from an AR-15 to an automatic pistol. How do I know you won’t start calling my hunting rifle an ‘assault rifle’?”

“I don’t trust these ‘child porn’ bans. People keep changing the definition of ‘child porn’ to mean everything from ‘drawings of fictional children’ to ‘fanfiction about adult characters who are children in canon.’ How do I know you won’t start calling Lolita ‘child porn’?”
