I didn’t really get what the parade was when I first watched the movie. Then I looked up the lyrics. “The parade of terror is coming, and it is in your name.” http://gendou.com/amusic/lyrics.php?id=8212&show=2

I guess the mindset’s a little different. Creature Feature is going off of a vaguely Christian sin-inspired thing. You get everything you want, and being given those things kills you and damns you. Paprika seems to be from more of a collectivist tradition. You get everything you want, but gaining only for yourself with no regard to those around you is unfulfilling. Eventually, you realize that, but if you can’t understand that you have responsibilities to others, then the only other way out is to kill yourself rather than be bored with life.

Oh wow, really? I always interpreted the parade as the madness that drowns you in cheerfully meaningless surreality cloaking utter obliteration, because it looks and sounds like my brain feels when it REALLY goes bad. It's the horrible endgame of when all meaning is lost.

It helps that on first watching of the movie, the first time I saw the parade I was like, "oh, what a nice parade" and by the end I was just D8 every time the music loomed.

Well, it’s just my interpretation. I don’t know for certain what Kon meant.

Did you watch Paranoia Agent? I tried it, but I got to the suicide pact episode and I just couldn’t anymore.

I haven't seen Paranoia Agent, I haven't been able to find it and I think it'd mess with me pretty bad; Perfect Blue was ROUGH.

I’ve been reading the Paranoia Agent liveblog on loreweaver-universe.tumblr.com, which is why I was thinking about Kon again. It heartens me a little that the blogger had trouble with the suicide pact episode—it’s not just me; that one’s rough. (Everyone seems to get hit a little differently by the other episodes, though. I reacted strongly to the corrupt cop who’s obsessed with masculinity. Lore was really bothered by the boy who’s obsessed with popularity, and SF Debris seemed to be hit hard by the guy who blames others for everything he does wrong.)

I mean, a suicide pact episode sounds like it'd be hellish no matter what!

Is the show one of those things where every episode is different? I don't know anything about it besides that it's intense and by Satoshi Kon.

There’s an overarching thread of a mysterious attacker, and the episodes deal with different people he attacks, and why he targets them. Everyone he targets is on the brink of an emotional breakdown, and a lot of them—not all—are very self-absorbed in one way or another. They can’t think beyond the problem they’re currently facing and how it affects them personally, and it’s so overwhelming that getting hit in the head feels like a relief. (There are other types of targets, though, like someone who . . . Oh crap, I just put this together in my mind . . . Someone who realized her father is spying on her while she undresses, and gets hit in the head so she can forget everything about him and not have to deal with what she learned. Yeah, you should never watch this show.)

LOL yeah wow that sounds like one of the worst things I could watch right now! TOO REAL!

I'll stick with Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers. (I want to see Millennium Actress but haven't been able to find it anywhere.)

Also wow, that sounds awful. I’ve had some sound/touch misfires when dehydrated, but I’ve never had a full audiovisual explosion like the parade.

Enh, it's not a synesthesia thing so much as an emotional one, that feeling of... drowning in cheerful meaninglessness, where you aren't really capable of noticing or caring how reality is unraveling, or being frightened or upset by it, despite the danger.

Like, those conversations Paprika tries to have to snap her coworkers out of it when the parade takes them? I've been the coworkers in those conversations before, and I reacted in similar ways. I can only imagine how terrifying or surreal it must've been for the Paprika folks who were trying to reason with me.

Fortunately, it hasn't happened in a long time.
